Getting
a PRINT of your DIGITAL CARICATURE or CARTOON
High quality
prints of our digital caricatures can be output at various venues.
Printing shops like Kinko’s, Sir Speedy and Rapit Printing
are generally less expensive than computer graphics imaging firms
like Photos, Inc., MinnBlue Digital or ProColor. The printing
shops output either laser prints or inkjet prints.
The computer graphics imaging companies usually offers options in
addition to printing such as mounting prints to high quality
backing that will protect the piece and make it very easy to frame
with minimal risk of damage. In the Twin Cities area, as of June
2002, Kinko’s was the least expensive if the file is sized to fit
on an 11 by 17 inch sheet and you ask them to simply print it out
directly from the TIF or EPS or PDF file without first importing
the file into any desktop publishing or other page layout program.
A large 11 x 17" print at Kinko’s was quoted to us as being $2.58.
Heavy card stock is available for this kind of print. Lamination
is also available. Next in price was Sir Speedy, which said they
could output on an oversized inkjet printer up to 36 inches wide
and any length at a rate of $11 per square foot. They also had the
option of printing an 11 x 17 inch piece from a computer file at
the rate of $10 for setup plus $2.50 for each copy. So you could
get as many copies as you want for $2.50 after the initial setup
fee. Rapit Printing's rep told us they had a 2 x 3 foot minimum
on large prints, beginning at $76. We use companies like ProColor
and Photos Inc. when we want the print mounted to a backing. Cintra
is our favorite. It’s a very firm, smooth plastic material to which
the print can be seamlessly affixed and laminated with either a
glossy or matte laminate.
If you are outside
of the Twin Cities area, you can usually find higher end output
bureaus like Photos Inc. and ProColor by looking under "computer
graphics" or "computer imaging" in your local Yellow
Pages directory.
